Critical Mass is a bicycle ride that takes place on the last Friday of every month in over 300 cities worldwide.
Part protest and part celebration, but mainly a great way to highlight the awesomeness of getting around of 2 wheels, create awareness of bikes as an alternative and sustainable form of transport, build community and celebrate our love of bikes.
Last month we met in the parking lot of Moses Mabhida Stadium, headed over the highway and under the tunnel onto Suncoast beach, then south all the way to Moyo along the promenade, and then of course back to the stadium.
Here is the updated facebook event for the next ride.. the first was awesome! That was a great social and fun event.. You were all part of history yay! Let’s invite everyone you know who rides to this one, and get it BIGGER!
This is a ride geared (excuse the pun) toward single and 3speed road cruisers, and upping the awareness of bicycles as a viable commuting/transport method, it is however open to ALL bicycles and riders!
For November the route is still being planned, but probably much the same but with a small patch of onroad heading first through to Umgeni River and the Green Hub, along the river bank, into the Blue Lagoon area, and then south to Moyo and back as before.
If you would like to spread the word about this gathering at your college, office, shop or work, here are the flyers and posters which will print perfectly:
- Critical Mass – November 2010 – Durban – A4 poster (314kb – PDF)
- Critical Mass – November 2010 – Durban – A4 flyer pack (332kb – PDF)
There is also talk of having a braai/gettogether/meetup at CityZen in Gordon Rd after November Critical Mass.

As numbers build we may take things to the streets more in the New Year.
Hopefully we can do something really special for New Year which happens to be New Years Eve, but lets see how things go
Here’s an awesome video from Critical Mass NYC on New Years Eve 2004:
