End of day 1 stranded in Dubai

I managed to get the last seat on a flight leaving for Frankfurt at 230pm. I truly pray it goes. I’ve been watching cnn in the hotel which in true style has made this volcanic ash story seem pretty serious. Thank heavens I’m not flying to the uk tho, those passengers are gonna be stooook for awhile. I wish my hotel was in Dubai itself and not 20min away in a less exciting area called Sharjar. Its weird that there isn’t a train or subway from here but apparently its being built – this is a relatively new district it seems. Nevertheless I enjoyed my afternoon strolling around the promenade and canal. Reminds me a little of what’s being done …

Still in Dubai oh yes.

I’m sure you have all heard the news about the icelandic volcano spewing ash into the atmosphere. As a result all flights to europe have been cancelled. Nice timing. The airline has put passengers into various dubai hotels so its not too bad apart from the fact I’d prefer to be in germany! I took a walk around my hood earlier. Not much to it tho. Nice beach promenade with families braaing and chilling on the lawns. This might be the straight edge capital of the world..no alcohol is sold ANYWHERE. Pretty cool.

Clean Dubai, clean me

Dubai airport has free showers. After a reasonable 8 hour flight in which I think I slept 4, thanks to the shower I now feel fantastic. 6 hours to Munich! Its a cinch. What else is cool here? Its incredibly, clean and people are polite and helpful. Maybe its like that everywhere else but South Africa? But that’s just inside the airport terminal, I’m not allowed out without a visa. Free wireless too, not like stupid home where you have to buy credit for the wifi access? Ridiculous. I know most of my hotels have wifi too so I should be good to do a daily update or two. Oh, and being a solo traveller I’m surprised at the nr …

In flight en route..

Despite the checkin chuckle I had, my first impressions of this airline are extremely good. The plane seems brand new or at least very well looked after. Hostesses are the prettiest too. I’m very happy with the closest person being 2 chairs away – who doesn’t like personal space!? So yes the flight is not full. What’s on the menu.., oh wow its a 3 course affair. Starter looks good being a macaroni + vegetable salad. Mains is mouth watering: penne pasta in a creamy sauce gratinated(!) with crumbled(!!) feta cheese, + offered with roasted vegetables. Now I could be on Florida rd by the sound of it hey? This is an inflight meal after all so let’s see how …

Checked in to Houston!?

In an amazing turn of events I very nearly ended up on a plane to Houston, via Dubai of course. Haha! Somehow the Emirates checkin person managed to confuse my surname with someone elses. I ended up with a boarding pass and luggage tagged for the states. As I was leaving the counter and my bag about to hit the conveyor I noticed my new surname and destination! “Sorry this isn’t me and not where I’m going!” Funny start to my journey..but a few minutes later it was sorted out. Let’s see where my luggage ends up. Nothing else too exciting in the international departures lounge at Durban airport (who knew?). Preflight nourishment: caramel fudge muffin. Emirates’ in flight lacto-ovo …
